Strength & Power Hour VideoCast: Productivity

Some of my best tips for staying productive in the coaching environment.

I Love Videos Like This & The 80/20 Rule

For some people I know, they get excited and all revved up by watching videos of extremely fast & pricey cars.  I, unfortunately, am not one of these guys.  What really revs my engine and gets me all jazzed up is watching incredible athletes.  I’ve applauded Nike over and over for nailing the sporting culture, and once again, they got it right with the video below.  I dig it and think there is a greater message or importance to the video.  It got me thinking…

I know of people who would rather take two scoops of this, one scoop of “X” before the workout, and two scoops of “Y” after the workout and then an hour later follow all that up with three spoonfuls of “Z”, and your good to go!  I love that the message in this video is, “Everything You Need, Is Already Inside”.  The evolving science of sport is moving rapidly, but understand that there is beauty in simplicity.  You don’t need a preworkout supplement.  You don’t need need a postworkout supplement.  ”Everything You Need, Is Already Inside”.  Don’t focus on spending your money on potentially dangerous supplements to ‘potentially’ improve performance by .1% when rather focusing on improving your recovery strategies, total body nutrition, sleep, workout regiment, and other factors have a much larger chance at improving your performance 100%.

The real lesson to this post is… Don’t spend 80% of your time chasing for the 20% increase.  Find that 20% in your training system, that gives you the 80% increase.  Use your time wisely because I can tell you one thing.  There is no such thing as a quick fix.

It’s Not About The Bike

Lance Armstrong Training for the Tour De France

I recently read a great book co-wrote by Lance Armstrong titled, “It’s Not About the Bike” in which Lance writes about his battle with cancer, the physical and emotional recovery afterwards, and his preparation to compete for the Tour De France.  In his writings, he talked extensively about the rigorous of the competitive cycling world and how he felt his entire athletic career prepared him for one of his greatest and most demanding competition ever –  his competition for his own life.

With the title of the book being “It’s Not About the Bike”, it made me think about the weight room and all of the strengthening and conditioning that we’re doing.  It’s easy to be consumed by the numbers, the strength gains, the mobility gains.  It’s often we look at athletes and see increases in sprint speeds, increased throwing velocities and a whole gamut of other quantitative measurements to back our hard work.  However, some times I walk away and think, “It’s Not About the Weight Room”.  Maybe we’re doing more than preparing athletes but rather preparing individuals for the hardships of life.  I structure my sessions to be a physical battle against themselves.  It’s a challenge every time an athlete walks in, and they must decide whether they are going to compete on that god given day.  By doing this, I feel like I’m creating an environment similar to those experienced later through life lessons.  Will there be struggle later in life for these athletes? Certainly.  Will there be demanding times with people demanding the impossible? Absolutely.

I think what we’re doing from a strength and conditioning perspective far exceeds just the strength gains and ‘numbers’ that coaches often want to hear about.  It’s must deeper than that.  ”It’s Not About the Bike” nor the “Weight Room”.  It’s about the struggle outside of both.  It’s about strengthening the body and the mind to deal with the hardships; be it job loss, a lost loved one, or a battle with cancer.  Don’t ever forget that strength coaches strengthen more than simply the body – rather it’s our responsibility to strengthen the mind and the spirit as well.

I cannot even begin to express how excited I am for this next project of mine. I know I am being secretive, but I just want to make sure everything materializes before I announce anything. I have been planning this project, announcement, endeavor for a long time and finally I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I want to thank all the readers who have “hung in there” through the many site updates, down-times, stagnant periods of lame articles. I guarantee you that this next announcement will blow you away and keep you coming back more and more.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to make this announcement by the end of the week but who knows, it may come earlier. Stick around, keep your browsers pointed at this blog, and I promise you that you will not be disappointed. There is a lot of good things coming soon.

Awesome Advertising

Several months have past by and who would have thought that my most successful article would be about the Jabbawockeez and Branding. I still think Jabbawockeez are doing a fantastic job branding their company. From gigs around the world to the Gatorade advertising campaign their featured in. They’re doing a fantastic job. Another company doing a great job advertising as of lately is none other than Gatorade.  Between the Primer, During and Recovery beverages, their advertising spots, and their tremendous web work; they are leading the charge in current trend advertising.
