Are You Making Yourself? – Nike Women

I’ve wrote about Nike’s “Real Women” advertisements in the past via this post here.  I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, what Nike is doing for women athletics is absolutely outstanding.  Now, I could break this video down biomechanically and talk at great lengths about the exercises done during this video but that would counter the “message” that this video is sending.  What I love about this video is the work ethic and athleticism these ladies are displaying.  This is such a positive message that Nike is reinforcing for the youth of America today.

 

If you’ve been around strength & conditioning for long enough, you’ll realize that a majority of female athletes will say “I don’t want to get too bulky”.  I rarely hear, “I want to become the most physically fit athlete of all time”.  I believe Nike’s campaign (which is most probably driven my capitalism) is at least profiting off of delivering such a positive message.

Grooving Movement Patterns Before Loading

I often explain to athletes that our strength and conditioning program is much like the Tortoise and the Hare analogy.  If we get overly concerned with adding weight and progressing before we have the proper movement patterning, than we’re essentially adding fitness on top of dysfunction. Remember, weight will always follow good movement patterning but good movement patterns will never blindly follow adding weight.

Step 1: The higher you go, the longer it takes.

Step 2: The higher you go, the higher the level of commitment.
Your commitment to your team, and the team’s commitment to you.

Step 3: The higher you go, the easier it is to lead.

Step 4: The higher you go, the greater your success.

Step 5: You never leave a level below, you build on it.

Step 6: As a leader, you won’t be on the same level with all of your team.

Step 7: You must work to carry other leaders with you up the steps.
